About WePOWER

The World Bank recently started “South Asia Gender and Energy” (SAGE) initiative with a plan to establish a “Women in Power Sector Network in South Asia (WePOWER)” to promote women engineers and practitioners in the energy and power sector, and bring normative change regarding women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education.

The example of the value propositions are:

  • Capacity building
  • Networking and mentorship for women engineers for career advancement
  • Exposure to technology and utility/energy sector in developed countries
  • Access to information and conferences
  • Recruitment opportunities
  • Exposure and encouragement to women students to pursue energy sector engineering jobs as a viable career option
The World Bank has identified leaders in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan and other South Asian Countries to carry out the activities mentioned above. The WePOWER Track of IEEE YESIST12 is one such activity to encourage students pursuing Electrical Engineering and other related streams to work on the power related projects pertaining to the theme given based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
